Season Spoilers

Betty Suarez is boldly going where she has never gone before: inside a one-piece. Sources confirm that Ugly Betty is heading to the Bahamas next month to shoot an episode on location at the Atlantis Resort and Casino. Most of the cast will be making the trek for the special episode, which will air in November and revolve around a big Mode photo shoot. “Location shoots can make or break you as an editor, so it’s a big deal for Betty,” reveals Ugly mole. There’s also a love triangle involves Betty, Matt, and a third party. (Ausiello)

The former Spice Girl, Victoria Beckham, and the celebrated designer Vera Wang, guest-starred in Ugly Betty’s “A Very Posh Wedding” episode, wherein Wilhelmina (Vanessa Williams) tried to seal the deal with tycoon Bradford Meade (Alan Dale). (KristinEonline)

Shakira is stepping into actress Mode. The sexy songstress has been tapped to play herself in an upcoming episode of Ugly Betty, ABC confirms. A network rep tells us Shakira “will be shooting her scenes in New York, but they will [appear] in the Bahamas episode—which will most likely air in November.” In an interview with People, show runner Silvio Horta explains the inspiration behind the pop star’s casting. “We had a very memorable moment in the third episode where Betty has a makeover that goes wrong and she struts down the street to ‘Hips Don’t Lie,’ ” says Horta. “She’s an enormous Latina icon, as is Betty, and we thought it was a perfect fit.” (Kristin Eonline)

Kristen Johnston will also guest on the campy hit, filling the role originally created for Paula Abdul. Kristen Johnston told us, “I took Paula Abdul’s part on Ugly Betty. She was going to do a part on Ugly Betty that I’m doing. I just shot my first episode, the premiere, last week. They wanted me to be this girl who dresses much younger than she is. She goes out clubbing, and she’s 40. So I have these La Lohan ripped black tights up and the shorts and then we did–and this was my touch–I was like what if she’s stuck in like 1994 and she listens  to like only the Cardigans? So we did the dark pink [lip liner] and then the frosted lipstick.” (KristinEonline)

Daniel was getting a new love interest named Denise since producers are casting the role of a late 30s early 40s-female who is funny, aggressive, Pilates-bodied, and power-suited. (Ausiello)

Sources confirm to me exclusively that Fisher Stevens is joining Ugly Betty in the potentially recurring role of Mr. Z., Betty’s dry, sarcastic new landlord. (Ausiello)

In the November 13 episode, CSI: Miami’s Adam Rodriguez kicks off his multi-episode arc as Hilda’s bad-boy ex and promptly finds himself embroiled in a love triangle with the sisters Suarez. One minute into his debut, and I couldn’t believe Miami let this guy go. An embarrassing-turned-empowering incident at school leads to a major turning point in the ongoing saga of Justin’s sexuality that is alternately shocking and heartbreaking. A significant character dies. I think. Ana Ortiz carves out an early spot on my Dream Emmy Ballot with a performance that will move you to tears and laughter. Honorable mentions go to Michael Urie, Mark Indelicato, Vanessa Williams, and America Ferrera, who has come to embody Betty so wholly that it’s easy to take her superior work for granted. Mode is rocked by news of an OMG departure.  (Ausiello)

Look for Matt Newton (Becki Newton’s real-life bro) to debut in the upcoming Bahamas episode as Mark’s new boyfriend. But that’s old news. Here’s some new news: His stint has been expanded. He’ll now appear in roughly four episodes. Additionally, Nadia Dajani (Emily’s Reasons Why Not) has been cast as Mode’s new creative director for a couple episodes. Cal Hartley imports her from the movie business to try to makeover the magazine. (Ausiello)

Actually, I’m hearing of a very cool episode that will be in the vein of Run, Lola, Run. Run, Betty, run! In it, Betty (America Ferrera) needs to get a diamond-encrusted bra across town, and she has three ways of getting there. Apparently, ABC is very hot on this episode in particular and is hoping for a ratings uptick from it. No word yet on whether Betty wears a red Sydney Bristow wig. (KristinEonline)

I can confirm that Matt will be making a departure in early 2010. Beyond that, my lips are sealed. (Ausiello)
Betty boss Silvio Horta would only say that Justin will continue “struggling with his identity and his journey is going to be funny, heartbreaking, moving and powerful.” (Ausiello)

I really don’t think Betty is in any immediate danger of getting pulled off the schedule. I mean, the ratings are bad but they’re not Dollhouse bad. For his part, Silvio Horta is preparing for either scenario. “Obviously, we all want the show to continue, but I don’t want to get caught off guard and have them tell me it’s the last season and have to wrap everything up in one episode,” he says. “So I have two season-ending arcs planned — one where it’s the last season and one where we continue for another one.” (Ausiello)

I’m hearing one of the Suarez sisters is going to be pregnant! My money’s on Hilda. Although Betty does already have at least one bump-concealing poncho?  (KristinEonline)

I’m told Matt make his choice,  if it’s Amanda or Betty, in the Bahamas in next week’s episode, and then—he’ll be off the show four episodes later. So it seems they both lose in the end!  (KristinEonline)

There’s a creative resurgence in the works that includes a “Run Betty Run” episode (in the vein of Run Lola Run), a splashy trip to the Bahamas with guest stars Christie Brinkley and Shakira and a big, fabulous Fashion Week episode focusing on Amanda (Becki Newton) and Betty (America Ferrera), not to mention a heating up of their current love triangle with Matt. (KristinEonline)

Inside sources tell me that ABC has been working on ways to try to save Ugly Betty (including the possibility of moving it to Wednesdays); however, if ratings don’t improve by mid spring, it’s likely that Betty will be canceled in May. A Betty mole tells me, “The writers have accepted that this season may be the last and are brainstorming endings now, just in case. The big question is: Who will Betty end up with? The writers’ room is deeply divided.” The three contenders are – Gio (Freddy Rodriguez), Daniel (Eric Mabius) and Henry (Chris Gorham). (KristinEonline)

Sources confirm for me that the show’s moving to Wednesdays at 10 pm/ET, most likely when it returns from its holiday hiatus in January. (Ausiello)

Sources confirm to me exclusively that Vanessa Williams’ real-life bro, Chris Williams (a.k.a. Curb Your Enthusiasm’s Crazy Eyez Killah!), will guest star in an early ‘10 episode as Willie’s drag queen doppelganger, Wilhediva Hater.  Per an Ugly insider, Willie gets tipped off that someone has been regularly impersonating her at a drag club and she tries to shut the act down. That is, until she realizes that faux Willie could come in handy by attending meetings and events on her behalf. As a result, “The two end up working together,” says my spy. (Ausiello)

Jesse Tyler Ferguson to reprise his season 1 role as Betty’s orthodontist. Ferguson returns in the Jan. 6 episode, the show’s first in its new Wednesday at 10 pm time-slot. Might his Dr. Farkus be back to perform the historic removal of Betty’s braces? Executive producer Silvio Horta prefers to leave that question unanswered. “It’s a really fun scene between the two of them” is all he would say. (Ausiello)

On Betty getting her braces off – According to Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who plays Betty’s orthodontist when he’s not busy being awesome as Mitchell on Modern Family, it’s probably going to happen sooner rather than later! He just tweeted, “In NYC. Here to check up on a certain patient I haven’t seen in a few years.” (KristinEonline)

Betty boss Silvio Horta tells me the Betty/Matt romance had run its course. “At a certain point it becomes difficult to go further unless we start [imposing] complications that are phony and forced,” he says.Horta is quick to point out that like many of Betty’s ex-loves, Matt will likely return at some point. “I don’t think it’s the last time we’ll see him,” he says.  (Ausiello)

Series creator Silvio Horta confirms for me that he may take a page from the show’s source material and explore a romance between Betty and her boss. “We’ve been batting around the idea,” he confesses. “It is not outside the realm of possibility that something [could] happen, but we’re not sure yet.” (Ausiello)

Betty Suarez is officially on the rebound. Mad Men’s Rich Sommer has landed a potentially recurring role on Ugly Betty as a love interest for the show’s suddenly-single heroine, sources confirm to me exclusively. Sommer, who is in between Mad Men seasons, will play Jimmy, a Seth Rogen-esque fireman who goes on what an Ugly insider calls “the date from hell” with Betty. Sommer’s first episode is slated to air in March. (Ausiello)

McPherson says the network is disappointed in the way Ugly Betty has performed on Friday nights, but don’t expect Team Suarez to close up shop any time soon. He told reporters “We still love that show,” and expressed hope that it would grow in its new Wednesday time slot with a little more marketing support. (KristinEonline)

ABC has just informed Ugly Betty producers that the show’s current fourth season will be its last.  What’s more, the network has trimmed Betty’s episode order from 22 to 20. Another bad news: Betty is about to hang up her poncho for good.  (Ausiello)

Sources confirm to me exclusively that the Broadway vet, Brian Stokes Mitchell., is joining Ugly Betty in the potentially recurring role of Willie’s former flame, Don. The twist? The guy is everything Vanessa Williams’ self-absorbed, superficial taskmistress is not: traditional, down-to-earth, and blue collar. That’s right, Willie used to be in love with an average Joe. He is slated to make his Ugly debut in late February. (Ausiello)

Ugly Betty has tapped Lainie Kazan (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) and Nestor Serrano (24) to play Bobby’s Italian parents, Dina and Anthony, sources confirm to me exclusively. Hilda meets her potential in-laws in this season’s 15th episode when she hosts a get-to-know-you dinner in their honor. Her mission (aside from, you know, getting to know them)? To find out if there’s any truth to rumors that Bobby’s dad has ties to organized crime. Unfortunately, the dinner does nothing to allay her fears. As of now, Kazan and Serrano are booked for one episode, although I’m told they could return later in the season. (Ausiello)

“The braces are coming off,” reveals series creator Silvio Horta of the March episode, which will find America Ferrera’s Betty being whisked off on an It’s a Wonderful Life-esque journey. “There’s a big fantasy element to it. We’ll ask the question, ‘What if Betty had perfect teeth?’” Change will also come to Betty’s professional life via a new job opportunity that “may take her away from Mode,” teases Horta. “We’re going to see how that impacts the people she works with as well as her family.” (Ausiello)

Questions surrounding Justin’s sexuality will be addressed (spoiler alert: he’s gay!), Wilhelmina’s first love resurfaces, and, as I previously reported, a major character will get hitched in the series finale. In possibly related news, rumor has it Christopher Gorham has been approached to reprise his role as Betty’s ex-love Henry — something Horta would neither confirm nor deny. (Ausiello)

Despite previous reports that the writers have been trying to decide whether Betty will end up with Gio, Daniel or Henry, I’m now told that, although nothing has been set in stone, they’re leaning toward a Kelly Taylor-esque, “I choose me” ending that may end up sending Betty (America Ferrera) to a foreign land for a fabulous new job. She may even end up with an old friend there. (KristinEonline)

Kathy Najimy is about to sink her teeth into a piece of Ugly Betty history. The funny lady has been tapped to play the orthodontist tasked with removing Betty’s trademark braces, sources confirm to me exclusively. Per an Ugly insider, her character will serve as the guardian angel who shows Betty what life would have been like had she been blessed with perfect choppers. Najimy’s episode is slated to air on March 24, three weeks before the show’s series finale. (Ausiello)

Aaron Tveit (a.k.a. Nate’s cuz and Serena’s ex from Gossip Girl) has been cast as a playwright who Betty goes on a date with in a late March episode. According to my Ugly insider, “The relationship starts great and ends horribly.” Not unlike every single episode of Saturday Night Live. (Ausiello)

Who’s getting married?: It’s a heterosexual couple whose names rhyme with Silda and Cobby. In related news, the lovely, talented, and loose-lipped Ana Ortiz confirmed over the weekend that Hilda will marry Bobby in the Ugly Betty series finale. (Ausiello)

Hooray for happy endings! Our favorite Ugly Betty gal, Ana Ortiz, has outed herself as the character who will be getting married at season’s end. When Disney’s D23 asked what’s to come for Hilda, Ana said, “I think there’s going to be a wedding…That’s exciting. I can’t wait to see what that entails. Hopefully since it’s our last season, they’ll really pull out the stops and give her a really nice wedding. We’ll see!” (KristinEonline)

A pivotal male character will profess his love for Betty. (Ausiello)

As Ugly Betty nears its April 14 series finale, it’s welcoming back, like, half of its former cast, including Ashley Jensen (Christina), Freddy Rodriguez (Gio), and maybe Chris Gorham (Henry). Jensen reappears in episode 18, when Betty goes abroad to cover London Fashion Week for Daniel and runs into her exported Mode BFF. Rodriguez’s comeback is a done deal. Gorham, however, remains a bit of a question mark. Last I checked he was in negotiations to return for an episode, but all I’m hearing now is radio silence. (Ausiello)

We just talked with Christopher Gorham himself at USA’s Character Approved Awards in New York and asked whether or not Betty and Henry were going to end up being Ugly Betty’s one true pairing. He told us, “I always thought that [Betty and Henry] were meant to be together, but it’s out of my hands.” We thought he sounded defeated as he said this, so maybe don’t hold your collective breath for a series-ending Suarez-Grubstick wedding? (Kristine EOnline)

How will Betty end? I’m told that Hilda will have a shower in London, and Betty, Hilda and Christina all end up drinking together. (It was shot on a green screen.) So it sorta sounds like what I’d reported before might be true, that Betty chooses none of the boys and goes solo to a “far off land.” Also, Justin kisses a boy. (Kristine EOnline)

It’s my understanding that producers would like to bring Rebecca Romijn back, but there’s no deal at the moment. Speaking of Betty’s swan song, I hear Hilda and Bobby’s wedding — which was shot Tuesday — is a four-hankie affair. “If you don’t cry at least once,” an insider tells me, “you have a heart of stone.” Also, expect at least two huge developments — one surprising and the other, eh, not so much. (Ausiello)

America Ferrera reports that the April 14 series finale doesn’t suck! “It’s satisfying to me,” she says, “and I think it will be satisfying to most of our viewers. I think everyone has a very different idea of what they want, which is great because they’re that passionate about it. But I’m very happy with the way it’s ending up.” Unless I’m mistaken, I think Ferrera has previously stated that she’d like to see Betty end up single. Just sayin’. (Ausiello)

Ashley Jensen is back in the house! Betty and Christina are reunited when the once-ugly one is sent to London for Fashion Week. Oh, and Hilda and Amanda are in too—a good ol’ time will be had by all. One other overseas surprise? Betty runs into Gio (Freddy Rodriguez). Betty writers, there’s still time to change course and let Betty end up with someone! (KristinEonline)

A lucrative opportunity leads Ugly Betty’s title underdog to part ways with Mode in the ABC comedy’s April 14 series finale, but her farewell bash quickly goes to the dogs. “Amanda’s beloved pooch, Halston, dies,” reveals series creator Silvio Horta, “and in true Amanda fashion, she turns Betty’s party into a funeral.”  (Ausiello)

The show is shooting several pivotal scenes on location in London today with America Ferrera and Eric Mabius for the April 14 series finale. “They’re shooting in Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square, amongst other places,” reveals a source. The British flag on Betty’s farewell banner was a rather big clue that her new career opportunity would take her across the pond, but that doesn’t explain what Daniel is doing there.  (Ausiello)

I ran into executive producer Sheila Lawrence at the show’s wrap party last week and here’s what she had to say about next Wednesday’s swan song: “Every character ends up in a good place — this is Ugly Betty after all,” she teased. “Amanda has a question answered that’s been looming since Season 2, Justin has a dream come true, and Wilhelmina quite possibly has the happiest ending of all.” (Ausiello)

The brilliant minds behind Ugly Betty are keeping the hope alive until the very end, folks. First, Daniel fawned over a beautiful, braces-less Betty, next Betty will ask Daniel to be her plus-one to Hilda’s wedding (platonically, of course—wink, wink!) and by the series’ final hour, aptly titled “Hello Goodbye,” Daniel’s reaction to Betty’s decision about her future will leave her dumbfounded.  (KristinEonline)

New: I can say that it’s a more than satisfying end to the fabulously fun series and that fans of Betty, Daniel or Betty and Daniel will not be disappointed. Do they end up together? You’ll have to watch. But I will tell you there is resolution and the promise of some sort of future together between the two, be it friendship or more. There’s even a bright future in the works for Wilhelmina that might just have to do with her getting everything she’s ever wanted. (KristinEonline)
