Season Spoilers

There’s a small a chance that George isn’t dead. A really, really small chance. Tiny. (Ausiello)

Katherine Heigl is adopting a child from Korea, does that re-explain producers’ decision to let her off the hook for five episodes of Grey’s Anatomy? – All indications are that she’s taking off to make that Greg Berlanti movie. The five episodes she’ll be missing may not be consecutive. (Ausiello)

If there are any good Owen and Cristina scenes in Grey’s Anatomy season premiere? – They have a really moving handholding scene. (Ausiello)

Anything about Mer-Der? – If you were among those fans who thought their Post-It note wedding was some kind of bad joke, there’s a scene at George’s funeral that should put a smile on your face. (Ausiello)

Grey’s Anatomy scoop on Owen and Cristina:  They’re headed for a dry spell. In the season premiere, Amy Madigan’s shrink advises Owen against making any further sexy time with Cristina until he can get the voices in his head to shut the hell up. They’re not breaking up. Just taking things slooooow. (Ausiello)

On Mark-Lexie scoop: “They’ve got a lot of challenges coming down the pike,” concedes exec producer Krista Vernoff. “The most consistent challenge is the one that’s built into the fabric of their relationship -  he’s pushing 40, she’s in her early 20s.” (Ausiello)

What will happen to Patrick Dempsey on Grey’s when Ellen Pompeo heads off on maternity leave? – He’ll get some much-needed alone time. As exec producer Krista Vernoff explains, Dempsey has been “patiently” waiting to get a story that wasn’t directly tied to the Der-Mer love story. And this season he’ll get his wish. “Derek hasn’t been a fully explored character separate from Meredith,” Vernoff admits. “The fact that by necessity Ellen is going to need a little less screen time gives us more encouragement to explore Derek as a doctor.” This includes what Vernoff describes as an “extraordinary medical story” involving Derek and a patient in this season’s sixth episode, directed by co-star Chandra Wilson. (Ausiello)

Mark and Lexie may be the cutest twosome on Grey’s Anatomy, and the cuteness continues in Thursday’s big season premiere, when Lexie confides in Mark about her feelings regarding George’s demise. It’s a quiet, gentle scene in the locker room, and we think you guys will dig it! (KristinEonline)

BC is airing promos for new episodes of Grey’s Anatomy, and by the looks of things, Owen (Kevin McKidd) and Cristina (Sandra Oh) are going to have a hot and heavy season.  (KristinEonline)

The newlyweds, Izzie and Alex, will be dealt a major blow at the end of next week’s episode (the best of the season). In fact, the crisis is so big that Izzie disappears for roughly five non-consecutive episodes. Even though Katherine Heigl’s mini-hiatus was coming, Izzie’s exit was no less powerful or emotional; and Heigl knocks it out of the park. (Ausiello)

Unlike Izzie, Meredith isn’t going anywhere — although we’ll begin to see less of her (literally and figuratively) after this week’s episode. Moreover, her diminished screen time will make perfect sense given what happens tonight. (Ausiello)

The aforementioned Oct. 15 episode is a big one for Callie and Arizona, but mostly for Callie. Hector Elizondo is back as her gay-fearing dad and this time he’s brought backup! (Ausiello)

Kim Raver is to play spoiler in Owen-Cristina romance.  Grey’s Anatomy is enlisting Jack Bauer’s ex to throw a monkey wrench into Owen and Cristina’s burgeoning romance. Sources confirm that Grey’s has tapped former 24 heroine Kim Raver to join the cast as a new surgeon and a possible love interest for Kevin McKidd’s doc. Raver’s role is recurring and she will debut in this season’s ninth episode, airing Nov. 12. (Ausiello)

Ever wonder what would happen if Sam and Dean were trapped inside an episode of Grey’s Anatomy? You’ll find out in episode 8! Move over McSteamy, make way for McSexy! (Ausiello)

Sources confirm that Ellen Pompeo is expected to return to the set of Grey’s Anatomy “very soon” after giving birth to baby girl Stella Luna Sept. 15. Thanks to her early return, as well as her willingness to preshoot scenes before the birth (most of which took place in bed after Meredith’s liver surgery in last night’s ep), it is working out that not a single episode will go Meredith Grey-less. (KristinEonline)

Sources confirm that 24 and Lipstick Jungle beauty Kim Raver will appear on the show starting Nov. 12 in a recurring role as a surgeon, and if things work out, she could be upped to series-regular status. (KristinEonline)

McKidd himself hinted at some sort of trouble ahead when he told us, “Someone comes to the hospital that [Owen] was connected to in his past—not his ex-fiancée, but it’s somebody we didn’t expect. I think it could get a little tricky, but exciting and interesting. Hopefully it will bring [Owen and Cristina] closer in the long run.”  (KristinEonline)

Kim Raver checks in to Grey’s Anatomy on Nov. 12 as a “possible love interest” for Kevin McKidd’s Owen Hunt. (KristinEonline)

Someone gets fired in this week’s episode. But what you may not know is that someone gets fired next week, too! (Ausiello)

Nothing stands out on the Mer-Der front, but there’s a memorable Mer-Cristina-Alex scene at the end that will have you crying and laughing, and in that order. (Ausiello)

Izzie Stevens and Katherine Heigl are not leaving Seattle Grace for good. But that doesn’t mean the next few weeks are going to be any less painful for abandoned husband Alex (Justin Chambers) or the rest of the original gang. Not only are the wounds from George O’Malley’s death still fresh, but after exclusively chatting to Sarah Drew, who plays one of the eevvvil Mercy Westers, we get the feeling that the superambitious new kids are going to be fighting tooth and nail to fill the vacuum left in Izzie’s absence. . (KristinEonline)

Sarah Drew did reveal that her character, Dr. April Kepner, is going to cut back on the nasty, needy All About Eve routine. According to Sarah, “Lexie’s (Chyler Leigh) apology that happened at the end of the last episode carries through, so there isn’t as much animosity in the rest of the episodes.” That doesn’t mean she’s not still desperate to secure herself a permanent position at Seattle Grace: “April is a very, very good doctor. She really knows what she’s doing, she’s worked really hard, and she wants to do her best and stick around.”  Sarah isn’t allowed to reveal how many episodes she’s signed to do, but she would definitely be interested in staying if the opportunity arose. (KristinEonline)

This week, the emergency room staff kills a lady, and hospital admins are on the warpath. One of the castmembers is definitely getting the ax in punishment, but who? Is one of the new kids getting cut, or could Callie (Sara Ramirez), Lexie (Chyler Leigh),  Cristina (Sandra Oh) or Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) really be in danger of losing their jobs? (KristinEonline)

I’m told by insiders that there should be at least two more crossovers before the season is through, though they have yet to hammer out details. (KristinEonline)

Danielle Panabaker, best known for her role as James Woods’ daughter on CBS’ Shark, is checking into Grey’s Anatomy next month. The actress will play a patient under the care of Cristina and Jackson in the Nov. 19 episode. “It’s a really sweet, heartbreaking story,” says a Grey’s insider. (Ausiello)

Meredith Grey is out of commission (officially because she donated an organ to her daddio, unofficially because Ellen Pompeo was having a kid), so not only is Patrick Dempsey’s Dr. Derek Shepherd getting the lead-character spotlight to himself this week on Grey’s Anatomy, he’s getting the voice-over! Pompeo does the Anatomy voice-over the overwhelming majority of the time, but now and again the spotlight shifts to another character’s point of view. (KristinEonline)

Football injuries are a very trendy topic these days (we blame Malcolm Gladwell), and Grey’s Anatomy jumps on the bandwagon in episode 11 when the gang treats a quarterback injured during a game. (KristinEonline)

Frankie Faison is set to play Miranda Bailey’s (Chandra Wilson) dad in the Nov. 19 episode of Grey’s Anatomy. (KristinEonline)

On Izzie and Alex – All we can promise is that Izzie will be back soon—Katherine Heigl is back on the set of Grey’s Anatomy this week, along with Ellen Pompeo—but no promises about a full Alex-Izzie reunion.  (KristinEonline)

Dr. “Beautiful Green Eyes” is still on the market, Jesse Williams himself dished exclusively to us. “Jackson’s about working and just kind of being really effective and not being involved in the business of ‘he said, she said’ and backstories and stuff,” the Grey’s addition told us. “But who are we kidding here? It’s Grey’s Anatomy; I’m sure there is something around the corner. I’m just waiting to hear.” Besides yourself, who do you want to see this hunk with? (KristinEonline)

Private Practice’s Kate Walsh is heading back to Grey’s Anatomy in early January to play a key role in a top-secret crossover event involving Addison, Mark, and that blond chick from Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles. In the Grey’s half of the crossover, Mark summons Addison to Seattle Grace to perform a surgery on TBCFTSCC (a.k.a. Leven Rambin). The storyline spills over into Private when, according to exec producer Shonda Rhimes, “complications arise and Mark ends up taking [her] back down to Los Angeles to get more surgery.” (Ausiello)

Inside sources and ABC confirm that producers of Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice are planning another crossover event. Anatomy star Chandra Wilson recently made a visit to the Santa Monica-set spinoff show Private Practice, and now Eric Dane and Kate Walsh are set to appear on both Shonda Rhimes shows on the same night. (KristinEonline)

Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) is going to be cheating on Owen Hunt (Kevin Mocked) with the “Hotness Monster” himself, Mercy Western Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams). The hookup goes down against the backdrop of a huge pediatric case led by our girl-crush Arizona Robbins (breakout star Jessica Caps haw). (KristinEonline)

Jesse Williams tells that, “There’s competition between Cristina and Jackson, but there’s an attraction that’s both physical and out of respect for her style, her swagger, her adventurousness and her kind of no-apologies approach. I think we have that in common.”  (KristinEonline)

“They [Derek and Meredith] will face some relationship challenges, many of them work-oriented, in the second half of the season,” reveals exec producer Shonda Rhimes. However, this latest obstacle will not result in the newly married-via-Post-It pair breaking up. (Ausiello)

ABC’s promo gurus are very sneaky! While we’re on the subject of Katherine Heigl, sources confirm to me exclusively that she’s taking another leave of absence from Grey’s — but this time her reasons are personal, not professional. Heigl will be going on a belated maternity leave to spend some QT with new daughter Naleigh. As a result, Izzie will be MIA for another string of episodes (most likely in early 2010.)  (Ausiello)

On Chief- Would the sight of him falling off the wagon do the trick? ‘Cause that’s what happens at the end of this week’s episode. (Ausiello)

Melissa George is joining the Fox drama as an Anna Nicole Smith-type who will go toe-to-toe with Tim Roth. Her character, Clara Martin, is the sassy wife of an older billionaire who has been murdered. After being exonerated in a high-profile murder trial, she assumes control of her husband’s empire. Lightman sees himself in her — naughty, fearless, strategic, and always game for the next adventure. In other words, she’s kinda nuts. George will recur beginning with this season’s 11th episode. (Ausiello)

On Mark and Lexie – “They’ve both really grown up since they were together, and most of the animosity that they had is gone,” says Shonda Rhimes, executive producer of both shows. “Now they’re friends, but they may end up falling back into their old patterns while they’re together.” s you know, the reason Mark pages Addison to Seattle Grace is that he needs her to perform surgery on a woman from his past. But here’s where the plot thickens: One possibly-true rumor making the rounds is that the woman — make that girl — is Mark’s daughter! And she’s pregnant! Rhimes isn’t commenting on the Papa McSteamy buzz, but she does acknowledge that Rambin’s character represents a “new obstacle for [Mark and Lexie]… I’m not sure it’s the kind of obstacle people are expecting, but it’s definitely a new one. I’m not sure they’ll stick together through it.” (Ausiello)

If you are rooting for Cristina-Jackson, you’ll be happy to hear from Jesse Williams that most of his scenes are with Sandra Oh and Chyler Leigh: “It seems to be Cristina and also Lexie [that I spent most time with], just because our characters did spend that whole episode together last week. Right when we started, Jackson and Cristina did the opposite of hit it off; immediately they had confrontation with each other, but I do think there is an underlying mutual respect and wariness there that will carry on.” Sounds like a definite case of unresolved sexual tension… (KristinEonline)

We’ve been told that Leven’s character features heavily in the Nov. 19 episode, titled “Holidaze,” and that during the course of that episode (which spans several weeks of story time), “Mark (Eric Dane) and Lexie (Chyler Leigh) must cope with the shocking arrival of a woman from his past.” What’s so shocking? Well, rumor has it that Leven plays Mark “McSteamy” Sloan’s long-lost daughter. (KristinEonline)

Kim Raver’s Teddy Altman is definitely a complication for Grey’s Anatomy’s most beloved twosome of the moment: Kevin McKidd’s Owen Hunt and Sandra Oh’s Cristina Yang. As Kevin McKidd correctly pointed out when we spoke earlier this week, “For a TV show to work, the characters can’t be happy all the time.” (KristinEonline)

Well, we’re a little worried about an upcoming episode where it seems producers are taking a page from an old Nip/Tuck episode: The anesthesia doesn’t work on a patient and she wakes up during her surgery and is conscious through terrible agonies of pain. (KristinEonline)

Seattle Grace gets into the webisode business tonight 11/19 with the launch of the Grey’s Anatomy series On Call, running on ABC.com through Jan. 21. Set at Joe’s bar, the six-installment series will focus on the undercurrent of intern drama we’ve seen over the past couple of years. Other featured characters include Steve Bailey as good ol’ Joe the bartender and Nora Zehetner as Dr. Reed Adamson.  (KristinEonline)

According to an interview Justin Chambers recently did with TV Guide.com)Alex Karev have a one-night stand in the first post-hiatus episode of Grey’s Anatomy, which also happens to be the first part of the show’s crossover with Private Practice. But who does Alex get busy with in the Jan. 21 episode? . (Ausiello)

Episode 15 of Grey’s Anatomy this season features a flashback to the romance between Chief Webber and Meredith’s late mother Ellis Grey, and the series is now casting for younger versions of James Pickens Jr. and Kate Burton. The story for this episode is most likely about the roots of Chief’s alcoholism, this casting development doesn’t do much to debunk rumors that the Hotness Monster is Ellis and Richard’s secret love child. (KristinEonline)

The show’s big flashback episode — slated to air in February or March — will reveal the toll Ellis’ demanding career (as well as her affair with Richard) took on a 4-year-old Meredith. There’s also buzz that the episode will show us Bailey’s days as a Seattle Grace intern and introduce us to the Nazi supervisor who schooled her. (Ausiello)

More drama! Despite the emotional smackdown Owen dealt her in the last episode, “From Teddy’s point of view, it’s not over,” Raver tells me. “But what’s great about Teddy is she’s been in love with him when she was in Iraq and he was engaged and she never crossed that line; that’s who she is. Now he’s in love with Cristina, and Teddy has feelings towards Cristina by being her mentor. So that creates a lot of drama and comedy. (Ausiello)

I’ve got good news and bad news. The good news:  Katherine Heigl is back on Jan. 21. The bad news: That episode was shot pre-maternity leave, which means she’ll disappear again for another stretch. (Ausiello)

Teddy and Cristina will have lots of fun stuff coming up. Kim Raver tells me, “There’s an interesting scene where Teddy drunkenly reveals things about Cristina to Owen, and that’s really fun. It was so great that they had her drunk, and Teddy just goes on and on and on. It was interesting.” (KristinEonline)

According to sources, Kim will appear in all but one of the remaining 12 episodes of the current season. An ABC source said they don’t have an exact episode count yet for Katherine’s remaining episodes this season. (KristinEonline)

According to one Grey’s source, Kevin (Owen) and Sandra (Cristina) are still shooting romantic scenes together for upcoming episodes, and getting along famously while doing so. “They were shooting a scene recently,” one eyewitness tells me, “and Cristina kept laughing because Kevin had just had his hair dyed a little more red than usual. She kept saying, ‘It’s so distracting!’” (KristinEonline)

Mexie is M’over. The lovers will break things off this week, but it doesn’t really become official until next week when word of their respective dalliances comes to light. Interestingly, someone’s not as pissed off as I would’ve thought. (Ausiello)

Katherine Heigl returns to the set in late February, so, by my guesstimation, we’ll see Izzie back on air in March or April. (Ausiello)

Grey’s Anatomy has tapped Angel’s J. August Richards and Cupid’s Sarah Paulson to play younger, circa ‘82 versions of Richard and Ellis in the Feb. 18 episode. The flashback-heavy hour, appropriately titled “Time Warp,” will shed light on the beginnings of the affair between the Chief and Mer’s mom. In separate sequences, we’ll see Bailey in her pre-”Nazi” days, and Callie shortly before she was introduced on the show. (Ausiello)

Elsewhere in this week’s episode 1/21 , Meredith and McDreamy are at odds over the Chief’s drinking problem, and Teddy and Cristina have yet to resolve their personal and professional conflict over Owen. (KristinEonline)

New: Dexter’s Courtney Ford — she played the Trinity Killer’s daughter, Christine, last season — is guest-starring in an upcoming episode as the sister of a lung transplant patient. (Ausiello)

New: Richard and Ellis aren’t the only Seattle Grace docs getting the prequel treatment in the Feb. 18 episode of Grey’s Anatomy. The time-tripping hour will also flash back to the early 2000s when Bailey was an intern and she was being menaced by a supervisor from hell (Heroes‘ Missi Pyle). “We’re going to see Bailey when she still called herself Mandy and had not yet learned to speak up,” explains series creator Shonda Rhimes, adding that the first time she laid eyes on Chandra Wilson “all Mandy’d up,” her heart broke. “I know that girl — hell, I was that girl. Mandy is Bailey’s inner geek, and Chandra plays the Mandy of it all brilliantly.” (Ausiello)

(Ausiello)
