Season Spoilers
In the opening minutes of the sixth-season, it was revealed that Mike picked soul mate Susan over Katherine. Surprised? I thought for sure Housewives boss Marc Cherry would drag out the Susan-Mike romance for another season at least. Heck, he essentially threatened to do just that last April at Paley Fest ‘09, telling fans he would likely string us along for “a few more years” before marrying them off. So what happened to change his mind?
Cherry had a fan-driven epiphany over the show’s hiatus. “I originally was going to have Mike marry Katherine,” he admits, “but as I went out into the world on vacation and just started talking to people they were so determined that Mike and Susan should get together; they were so insistent on it. So I started to think, ‘What if I went that way.’ And it occurred to me that it might be a more effective way to go as opposed to frustrating the fans for another year by keeping Mike and Susan apart. The fans demanded it in a voice so loud I kind of was scared to go against them.” There were creative advantages as well. Cherry says having Mike and Susan happily married “plays better for this season’s mystery.” It also gives Dana Delany a meaty woman scorned story, the beginnings of which we saw tonight. “Katherine has a breakdown,” says Cherry. “And it’s going to be one of the funniest breakdowns you’ve ever seen.” But what about Cherry’s assertion at Paley Fest that happily married couples “are the death” of soap operas? “The truth is, Tom and Lynette have been married for five seasons going on six and I’ve managed to keep that relationship [interesting],” he maintains. “There’s stuff to mine there once we accept that they’re together as a couple. “I don’t anticipate ever breaking [Mike and Susan] up again,” he continues. “So now it’s up to me to find out what’s interesting about that marriage. I’ve done it with other marriages on the show, I now just have to do it with Mike and Susan.” (Ausiello)
Scoop on Bree and Carl: Marc Cherry tells me that through the affair Bree will “discover her sexuality in a major way. And it’s going to change that character a little bit. Marcia’s been having a lot of fun playing a newly sexual Bree.”
(Ausiello)
On chances that Desperate Housewives will release Neal McDonough’s Dave from the loony bin: I asked Marc Cherry that question and got this curious response - “Not this season.” (Ausiello)
Who is getting married on Desperate Housewives?: This is one secret the cast and crew are keeping close to their hearts. We asked Dana Delany (Katherine Mayfair) when we saw her at Emmy rehearsals who’s going to be walking down the aisle. “I can’t tell you that!” she said. “All will be revealed next week. I’m so happy because I have a wonderful storyline this year. I’m just having a ball. I’m kinda going over the edge, only as Katherine can. We are going to see drama with the partnership between Bree, Katherine and Orson. I love Katherine’s relationship with Bree because there’s always this ‘frienemy’ thing going on.” Another thing to look forward to? “The fun thing for me this year has been working with Drea de Matteo,” said Delaney. “She’s the new housewife and she’s the only person that Katherine has left, the only one who’ll put up with her.” (KristinEonline)
Catastrophe rocks Wisteria Lane. That noise you hear is the sound of property values plummeting on Wisteria Lane. This November on Desperate Housewives, the most dangerous street in America will be the site of yet another calamity, this time a neighborhood plane crash. “It’s going to be my cliffhanger for the first half of the season,” series creator Marc Cherry says of the tragedy, which, he adds, will “affect everyone’s lives.” Since the story is still in the planning stages, many of the biggest details — including who’ll be on board the small aircraft and who’ll be in its. The catastrophe will not claim the life of a housewife. “I’d love to kill somebody ’cause that’s just what I do,” he laughs. “But the truth is, right now I don’t have anyone major dying.” (Ausiello)
Whitney Houston not really joining Desperate Housewives. Reps for the ABC drama scoff at rumors that Whitney Houston is in talks to join the cast. (KristinEonline)
Who’s Dying on Desperate Housewives?- It’s a showrunner’s prerogative to change his mind. So, although he insisted he wasn’t killing off any characters in this November’s big Wisteria Lane plane crash, Desperate Housewives boss man Marc Cherry has decided, on second thought, to kill several, including one that my mole says is a fan favorite. (Ausiello)
There are some changes a comin’ to Desperate Housewives this Fall — apparently a plane crash will send at least one of the residents of Wisteria Lane to the grave. Marc Cherry is reportedly plotting to kill off several cast members, including a “fan favorite” during November sweeps. I’m thinking we might need to prepare to say farewell to Mrs. McCluskey, Andrew, or even Katherine, who now seems a bit superfluous since Drea de Matteo moved in. (KristinEonline)
Desperate Housewives is going back to the future, but this time it’s just temporary. And imaginary. An early January episode — the first following the Dec. 6 plane crash cliffhanger — will find the housewives pondering numerous “What If” scenarios. Two Wisterians featured prominently in the alternate reality sequences will be Gaby and Carlos’ youngest daughter, Celia, and Mike and Susan’s son, MJ. I know this because DH is currently casting thirty something versions of both characters. (Ausiello)
A Housewives insider insists there’s no truth to a report in The National Enquirer claiming the Emmy winner is being written off the show for budgetary reasons. Per my source, the terms of de Matteo’s Housewives contract — which calls for her to appear in 20 of this season’s 23 episodes — remain unchanged. (Ausiello)
We already reported that— Orson (Mr. Marcia Cross) and Bree (Marcia) will be trapped inside their house. Kyle MacLachlan confirmed that Orson will survive the much-buzzed-about plane crash that leaves five characters dead. (KristinEonline)
We know it’s not Kyle MacLachlan who’s getting killed off, but check out the four additional sneak peeks to see Bree serve Orson with divorce papers (better than death, right?) and Katherine mess with Susan’s head, plus Gabrielle-Lynette cat fight with a very special Christmas theme. (KristinEonline)
Susan Meyer will be doing a seductive striptease in an upcoming episode of Desperate Housewives. And believe it or not, Teri’s being taught the dance by none other than the latest hot brunette to come to Lost: Sheila Kelley, also known as Mrs. Richard Schiff, also known as the creator of the striptease workout S-Factor. Though Kelley wouldn’t say who will be on the receiving end of Susan Meyer’s scandalous erotic display—It has to be Mike Delfino, right?–she does reveal that Teri is a pro on the pole. (KristinEonline)
Tom Scavo is finally getting professional help for that nasty mid-life crisis of his. Desperate Housewives has inked a deal with Frasier’s Jane Leeves to play Tom’s psychotherapist in at least two episodes, sources confirm to me exclusively. (Ausiello)
One of the causalities of the plane crash is a husband who finds himself paralyzed and becomes quite the little household tyrant from his wheelchair. (KristinEonline)
Sources confirm to me exclusively that Julie Benz — whose character, Rita, succumbed to the most horrific bubble bath in television history in last month’s Dexter finale — has been cast in the recurring role of Debbie, a stripper with a heart of gold and a Masters degree in education. When Susan offers her the chance to transition into a more legitimate career, Deb jumps at it.Benz is booked for at least three episodes, the first of which is scheduled to air in February. (Ausiello)
ABC just dropped new photos from the Jan. 21 episode of Grey’s Anatomy, and not only will Katherine Heigl be gracing us with our presence, but it looks like separated newlyweds Izzie and Alex (Justin Chambers) are finally going to have a heart-to-heart! “After learning of Richard’s drinking problem, Derek confronts him for the sake of his friend and the hospital, Izzie returns, hoping to reconcile with Alex, and tensions run high between Teddy, Cristina and Owen in the aftermath of Cristina’s startling confession.” (KristinEonline)
This is the big news, “I have a very exciting storyline coming up that I’m really excited about,” reveals upcoming Castle guest star Dana Delany, who adds that the top-secret plot (thankfully) does not involve a continuation of crazy Katherine. “It’s a new Katherine.” (Ausiello)
New: Page’s first episode is slated to air in late February. Joining Desperate Housewives for a multi-episode arc as Jeremy, a well-trained cook who idolizes Bree (Marcia Cross) and her old-fashioned values. (Ausiello)
